Job Description

The Fisheries Electronic Monitoring Specialist- (WIO) contributes to developing TNC’s global large-scale fisheries strategy and the global strategy’s alignment and execution into the WIO context. They help to establish TNC as a major conservation partner within the WIO. They build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. They will contribute to advancing the growing portfolio of projects, focused on fisheries transparency and seafood sustainability. It will entail fundraising efforts in alignment with the country, regional and global teams.

 

This is a dynamic position that works across at least four African Regional country programs, the global strategy team, and the business functions of operations, finance, communications, policy, and corporate engagement. The ideal candidate values collaboration and is able to manage multiple complex work streams and can identify strategic opportunities..

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ experience in fisheries management or a similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience, in Western Indian Ocean.
  • Experience engaging across and/or working within fishery departments, industry partners, and other stakeholders to achieve a common objective.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads, and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience building partnerships and strong relationships with the private sector, coastal communities, government agencies, and civil society organizations related to marine conservation and fisheries management issues.
  • Experience negotiating.
  • Experience completing tasks independently and timely.
  • Experience with communication, via written, spoken, and graphical means in English. With preferred understanding of additional languages, which may include but are not limited to: Swahili, French, Spanish.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in training and curriculum design.
  • Availability to travel up to 25% both domestically and internationally.
  • Experience conducting or working on fisheries-related scientific research and ecosystem interactions.

 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of large-scale fisheries management, electronic monitoring, and marine conservation principles and practices, preferably in the Western Indian Ocean.
  • Over 7 years of experience working in and/or with the following, preferably in the Western Indian Ocean: seafood supply chains; Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance government teams; Marine Stewardship Council; Fisheries Improvement Projects.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, and implementing fisheries management policy and plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
  • Knowledge of current political, socioeconomic, and governance trends and practices that affect the marine environment, particularly in the Western Indian Ocean.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in marine conservation, fisheries management, and governance.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Politically savvy.
  • Experienced in producing communication materials and communicate conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
