Sotta Mining Corporation Limited (SMCL) is a Tanzanian-incorporated joint venture company primarily focused on developing the Nyanzaga Gold Project, located in the Sengerema District of the Mwanza Region, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Mwanza city .
Ownership and Structure
SMCL is 84% owned by Perseus Mining Limited, an Australian mining company, and 16% by the Government of Tanzania, reflecting the country’s free carried interest as stipulated under the Mining Act of 2010 (amended in 2017) .
Nyanzaga Gold Project
The Nyanzaga Gold Project is poised to become Tanzania’s largest gold mining operation, with an estimated investment of approximately USD 500 million. The project is expected to produce an average of 250,000 ounces of gold annually over its first eight years of operation .
Community Engagement and Compensation
In alignment with international standards, SMCL has initiated compensation payments to individuals affected by the Nyanzaga project. As of September 2023, the company had disbursed over TZS 3.7 billion to 142 project-affected individuals, with plans to complete the compensation process in the subsequent months .
Equipment and Infrastructure Development
In April 2025, SMCL awarded Metso an order exceeding EUR 20 million for energy-efficient comminution equipment, including a Superior™ MKIII 4265 primary gyratory crusher and two Premier grinding mills. These installations are part of the infrastructure development for the Nyanzaga project .
