About Company
Dark Earth Carbon turns agro-forestry waste into pure stable carbon, known as biochar.
As plants grow they naturally absorb COâ‚‚ from the atmosphere. This carbon is stored as woody biomass. Currently thousands of tonnes of agricultural plant waste is left to rot or is burnt, releasing all that carbon back into the atmosphere. Instead at Dark Earth Carbon the plant waste goes into a pyrolysis reactor turning the biomass into biochar.
Dark Earth – Clear Sky
Biochar is a powerful long lasting soil amendment. We get our name from Terra Preta, or Amazonian Dark Earth. These are places in the Amazon where people used char thousands of years ago to improve the fertility of their soils, today we can still see the benefits
Biochar improves soil quality and plant yield :
-
Its high porosity improves water retention, encourages the growth of microbe that build soil organic matter, and improves crop health and resilience to disease.
-
Its negative charge increases the storage of nutrients in the soil and provides a slow release to the plants.
-
Its high pH helps neutralise acidic soil, making nutrients more available to plant roots.
