Relationship Manager – EMDOs

Location: Head Office

Reporting To: (Implied management structure based on objectives, e.g., Head, Global Financial Institutions/Wholesale Banking)

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven Relationship Manager to join our team, focusing on the strategically vital EMDOs segment (Embassies, Multilateral, and Donor Organizations). The successful candidate will be responsible for driving business development, managing key relationships, and structuring tailored financial solutions to achieve significant growth and profitability targets.

Job Objectives & Key Responsibilities

1. Business Development & Account Management

  • Identify, update, and manage a database of EMDOs within the country, targeting and acquiring “must-win” accounts and mandates.
  • Proactively engage EMDOs to understand their projects in Africa, the flow of funds, and potentially identify third-party vendors/agencies (e.g., from Europe or the US) acting as intermediaries.
  • Drive UBA Group’s EMDO relationships, covering account negotiation, opening, and ongoing management, particularly for new projects.
  • Follow through on the “Must Win list” through continuous engagement and recurrent proposal submission.
  • Collaborate with the Group EMDOs Team to ensure seamless conversion and on-boarding of mandates.
  • Actively seek out SDG-related events and causes for strategic partnerships or sponsorship opportunities.

2. Strategy, Networking & Collaboration

  • Develop relationships consistent with market penetration targets, including creating annual relationship plans, monthly business development pipelines, and ensuring account profitability.
  • Network with key stakeholders to ensure UBA is included in the EMDOs community’s database and invited to events, RFIs, and RFPs nationwide.
  • Actively engage EMDOs Relationship Managers in London and New York to secure support for pitches involving organizations headquartered outside Africa.
  • Partner with the Retail and Transaction Banking Sales teams for input on pitches and proposals.

3. Product & Financial Management

  • Maintain a deep understanding of the bank’s products and services relevant to the EMDOs segment.
  • Provide necessary strategic direction and guidance to product marketing units for the successful launch and sustenance of new initiatives.
  • Ensure follow-through on all service commitments to guarantee excellent product delivery.
  • Advise the Country MD/CEO on new business opportunities and develop strategies for financial benefit realization.
  • Enhance customer service efficiency for UBA Group’s EMDOs business.

Key Performance Competencies

The candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Achieve the approved EMDOs PBT (Profit Before Tax) target for the Bank.
  • Achieve sustainable business growth in the segment with consistent share of wallet growth.

Candidate Profile

Academic Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Banking, International Relations, or a related field.
  • Advantageous: A Master’s Degree in Development Studies, International Business, or Economics.
  • Professional Certifications (Advantageous): Certified International Development Finance (CIDF), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in relationship management, preferably focused on development organizations, NGOs, or similar institutions in emerging markets.
  • Experience managing client portfolios within the development finance sector, including bilateral/multilateral organizations or international development agencies.
  • Proven track record in structuring financial solutions tailored to development organizations, including risk mitigation and sustainable finance solutions.
  • In-depth ability to understand and manage development finance products, such as grants, project finance, and concessional lending.
  • Strong knowledge of global development trends and regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate cross-cultural environments and manage projects/clients across multiple countries or regions.
